Digital membership card: what it is and how to implement it

The membership card is no longer a piece of laminated cardboard lost at the bottom of a wallet. A digital card is a document members carry on their phone, always up to date and always at hand. Here’s how it works.

What a digital membership card is

It’s a document (usually a PDF or a web page) that shows: the member’s name, photo, membership number, category, sign-up date, fee status and a QR or BIDI code for verification. Members can download it from their personal area on the association’s website whenever they want.

Advantages over the physical card

  • It doesn’t get lost: if members change wallets or the card expires, they download it again in 10 seconds.
  • Always up to date: if the member’s category or expiry date changes, the card updates itself.
  • It costs nothing: no printing, no laminating, no mailing.
  • Verifiable: with the QR code, anyone can check that the card is valid.
  • Eco-friendly: zero plastic, zero postal deliveries.

How to implement it in your association

If your association uses WordPress and Convoca Members, the digital card is included. From their personal area, each member sees a “Download card” button and gets a PDF with all their details. If your association uses another system, you’ll need to generate a similar document by linking the member’s data to a template.

The digital card doesn’t replace the physical one if your association’s bylaws require it. But it is a complement that saves work and gives your members a modern service. See how it works in the demo →
