Volunteer check-in from your phone (even without internet)

Imagine you’re organising an environmental volunteering day. It’s 9 a.m., in a natural park with no phone signal. 25 volunteers turn up. You pull out a sheet of paper and a pen to write down who has arrived. Three people queue. One leaves without signing in because they were in a hurry. At the end of the day you don’t know exactly who came and who didn’t.

Mobile check-in changes everything

With a digital check-in system like Convoca Shifts, each volunteer opens a web page on their phone and taps “Register attendance”. Done. They don’t need to install an app. They don’t need signal. The system works offline: it saves the record on the phone and syncs it when the connection comes back.

How it works technically (without the jargon)

It’s a PWA (Progressive Web App): a web page that behaves like an app. The volunteer opens it once on their phone, adds it to the home screen and that’s it. When they arrive at the shift location, they open the “app”, tap a button and the record is saved. If there’s no internet, it’s saved on the phone and sent once the connection is back.

Benefits for the coordinator

  • You see who has arrived in real time. No paper, no lists, no head counting.
  • Automatic history. You know how many shifts each volunteer has completed without keeping a separate spreadsheet.
  • Reliable data. You no longer depend on the coordinator remembering to write everyone down at the end of the day.
  • Works anywhere. Parks, beaches, hills, basements with no signal. It doesn’t matter.

An association that signs people in on paper is stuck in 2010. One that does it with a phone is in 2025. Discover Convoca’s offline check-in →
