How to create your association website with WordPress in one afternoon

Setting up your association’s website on WordPress is easier than you think. You don’t need to know how to code, hire an agency, or spend hundreds of euros. Set aside an afternoon, follow this guide, and you’ll have your site ready.

What you need (and what it costs)

  • Domain: your website’s name (e.g. ampa-san-juan.es). It costs around €10–15 a year. You buy it from any registrar (Namecheap, DonDominio, Raiola).
  • Hosting: the place where your site lives. From €40 a year with basic shared hosting. If you get domain and hosting together, it usually works out cheaper.
  • WordPress: it installs for free from your hosting control panel (most offer one-click installation).
  • Theme: your website’s design. There are hundreds of free themes in the WordPress repository. Storefront, Astra or GeneratePress are good options to start with.

Step by step

1. Buy the domain and hosting (30 minutes)

Pick a short, easy-to-remember name. For an association, “.es” or “.org” is better than “.com”. The cheapest hosting is plenty to get started.

2. Install WordPress (5 minutes)

Most hosts have an automatic installer. Open the control panel, look for “WordPress” or “Softaculous”, enter your association’s name, an email and a password. Click install. Done.

3. Choose a theme (30 minutes)

Go to Appearance → Themes → Add New. Find one you like, install and activate it. Don’t obsess over the perfect design — you can always change it later.

4. Create the basic pages (1 hour)

Home, About us, Activities, Contact. Four pages are enough. Write the content thinking about what a neighbour is looking for: who you are, what you do and how to join.

5. Install the plugins you need (30 minutes)

For association management, install Convoca. For forms, Contact Form 7. For SEO, Yoast. Three plugins and you’re up and running.

In total: 3 hours and €50 a year. Your association now has a digital presence. Get started with Convoca →
